The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

If you live in Washington DC, you probably have seen or heard of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This solemn and majestic memorial honors the fallen heroes of America’s wars. But do you know the history and significance of this sacred site? In this post, I will share some interesting facts and tips about visiting the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, one of the most iconic attractions at Arlington National Cemetery.

History

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was established in 1921 after Congress approved the burial of an unidentified American soldier from World War I in a special sarcophagus made of white marble. The idea was to pay tribute to all the unknown soldiers who gave their lives for their country and whose remains could not be identified. The sarcophagus has three Greek figures sculpted on the side, representing Peace, Victory, and Valor, and six wreaths that represent the six major campaigns of World War I. On the back of the tomb is an inscription: “Here rests in honored glory an American soldier known but to God.”

Later, unknown soldiers from World War II, Korea, and Vietnam were interred in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, although the Vietnam Unknown was later identified and removed in 1988. The crypt that contained his remains is now empty, but it has a new inscription that honors and keeps faith with America’s missing servicemen.

Culture

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a memorial symbol of national unity and sacrifice. It represents all the Americans who fought and died for their country, regardless of their name, rank, or background. It also reminds us of the cost of war and the value of peace. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is where people can pay their respects, express their gratitude, and reflect on their role as citizens.

One of the most impressive aspects of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is the guard duty performed by the Tomb Guard sentinels, volunteers from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, also known as “The Old Guard.” The Tomb Guard sentinels guard the Tomb 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and in any weather. They follow a precise and rigorous routine involving marching, saluting, and changing shifts every hour or half, depending on the season. Guard duty is considered one of the highest honors in the Army, requiring high dedication, discipline, and professionalism.
